How-to: map your network

From blank canvas to a documented topology.

  1. New Map in the NetMapr toolbar → name it after the site or segment (e.g. HQ — Core).
  2. Add devices — drag from the device palette onto the canvas. Every node gets a type (router, switch, server, firewall…) that sets its icon and default styling.
  3. Draw connections — drag from one node's edge to another. Connection styles can encode link type (fiber, copper, VPN) — be consistent and the map becomes legible at a glance.
  4. Group what belongs together — racks, VLANs, sites. Groups collapse visual noise on large maps.
  5. Link nodes to reality — select a node and link it to its AssetTrakr asset and its NoteTakr runbook. This is what makes the map living documentation instead of a drawing that rots.
  6. Share or export — invite your team, or export SVG/PNG for the wiki and GraphViz for tooling.

Tip: map segments, not the universe. Five focused maps ("Core", "DMZ", "Branch — Denver") stay readable and current; one 400-node mega-map does neither.
